SAIF slams Council's cutting Coroner's Services

Mervyn Pilley CEO of SAIF today slammed two Council's - Cumbria and Norfolk - for seeking to reduce Coroners services in their areas primarily to save money. "All reasoned consultation on this issue has been ignored by both Council's" said Mervyn. "The Council's are using a recent draft bill on Coroner reform as the excuse to make the changes, but in reality this bill has gone back out to consultation and we feel that local authorities should not be using this excuse to potentially damage the service offered to the bereaved. We believe strongly that Coroners service should be funded centrally by National Government to avoid local funding issues which clearly leads to a postcode lottery for services. We will continue to fight against these changes".
