J.J. Burgess & Sons have been a family business since 1700, as Beehive Makers, Tanners, Clock Makers and Bark dealers and solely Funeral Directors since 1839.

The business has been passed from father to son and all have bore the initials JJ, to this day both of Justin’s Sons are JJ.

Following the sudden death of my Father in 1987 my Mother was faced with the prospect of continuing running the business alone until I finished my education and decided if a career in       the Funeral Profession was for me or not.

A career in the Funeral Profession was the furthest from my mind at the age of 14, however Funeral Directing was obviously in my blood as I joined my family business in June 1992 as the fifth generation to do so.

Working alone Mother had heard about SAIF and made the wise decision to join, believing that SAIF was the way forward to protecting the independents.

I sat and passed my Diploma in Funeral Directing on 9th September 1993. I was invited to join the SAIF executive in 1998 and served on various committees. In 2003 I was inducted as the youngest ever SAIF National President.

Within my own family business we strive to uphold the traditions that are synonymous with
not only out family business but that of all Independent Family Funeral Directors. And yet are
ever striving to implement new systems and procedures to improve our services to our bereaved families.

I am passionate about SAlF and the ideals that it promotes and encompasses, SAlF is without doubt the future for Independent Family Funeral Directors.
