There are currently three associations of Funeral Directors. Members of all of these associations require their members to provide clients with written estimates and price lists. They will also provide (if required) a basic funeral however this will not cover things like church or crematorium fees, flowers, following cars or embalming.

Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF)

Established in 1989 with a membership covering over 900 funeral homes. The only organisation which represents, solely, the truely Independent Funeral Director. What is SAIF?

SAIF Scotland exists to look after the interests of independent funeral directors in Scotland as well as the Scottish public. Contact details for SAIF Scotland can be obtained by ringing 0845 230 6777.

National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD)

Established on 1905, formerly the British Undertakers Association, this was until the mid 1980's the principal trade association in the funeral profession.

Funeral Standards Council (FSC)

Established in 1993 when the Co-operative Societies broke away from the NAFD. Founding members were the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) and the Funeral Planning Council (FPC).
