With a large number of independent, family run funeral directors currently being acquired by the Co-op and other large funeral business groups we would urge caution if you hold a prepaid funeral plan.

The reason for the concern is that experience shows that it is not always immediately clear who owns the acquired business, especially where a well known "family" name is retained as part of the business purchase.

Not all funeral plan providers tell the plan holder when a funeral director ceases to be independent. If you want your funeral plan to stay with an independent funeral director you will therefore need to ensure that your nominated funeral director is still independent. A quick way of checking the position is to search on the internet using the excellent site www.uk-funerals.co.uk. Alternatively if you are in any doubt and believe the business may have been sold we recommend that you should contact the relevant funeral director.
